Prophecy Sign: Increase in technology and knowledge
The expansion of human knowledge is growing exponentially, to the point where in a couple of decades it may be possible to merge the human consciousness with machine or to augment the human body with genetic upgrades to essentially make humanity immortal, or at the very least, long lived. We suspect that this push towards transhumanism will have much to do with the coming 'mark of the Beast' which may well be an offer to expand one's self beyond the mere creation of God, to that of a human hybrid, (and thus unredeemable to God). The bible recognizes this desire for mankind to seek out immortality on his own accord, and it will not go well for those that make that choice.
During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them. Revelation 9:6 NIV
Beyond human: Exploring transhumanism
The idea of humans and technology coming together to create something "more than human" isn't new. Humans have been technologically enhancing their capabilities for thousands of years, and many of our unquestioned activities involve technologically altering ourselves. For instance, vaccines are a medical technology that we introduce into our bodies to make them more resistant to diseases, so that we can "upgrade" our immune system.
Have we ever not been technologically enhanced in some way? The answer is unclear because we don't have a strict sense of where "human" stops and "transhuman" begins. "Let's say you wire me up to a machine," says Allenby. "Do I become different when part of what I think I am is, say, a battle tank, or a fighter airplane? When do I cross that line to being not human?" Just as the humans of tomorrow might be unrecognizable to us, the humans of today might be unrecognizable to people from several centuries ago. We live longer, our immune systems are different and our brains are even wired differently.
Transhumanists will outnumber Christians by 2035
Along with the rising rate of atheism, this will cause Transhumanism to overtake Christianity by 2035. Evolutionary psychologist, Dr. Nigel Barber, argues that “more educated countries have higher levels of non belief and there are strong correlations between atheism and intelligence.” Technology is accepted among religious and non-religious people around the world. There are roughly 2.2 billion Christians. The total world population is currently around 7 billion. According to a UN Telecom agency report, around 6 billion people have cell phones. This demonstrates the ubiquitous nature of technology. As human bio-enhancements become more affordable, billions of humans will become Transhuman regardless of religious beliefs.
Give Me That New Time Transhumanism!
Transhumanism–the belief that through technology we can become immortal and redesign a better “post-human”species–intends to become our primary source of societal values:
Why consider ourselves made in the likeness and image of God, when we can recreate ourselves in our own, individually designed, “post human” image? Why worry about heaven, hell, or the karmic conditions in which we will be reincarnated when we can instead enjoy radical life extension, perhaps even attain immortality by uploading our minds into computers? Indeed, transhumanist prophets such as Google’s Ray Kurzweil and Oxford University’s Nick Bostrom, eschatologically assure believers that science will soon wipe way every tear from our eyes, and there will be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor pain, for through technology, the former things will all pass away.
